FGB011 Dinard Golf Club Dinard Golf Club

Dinard Golf Club

Ref: FGB011

This stunning links may remind you of classic British (more specifically, Scottish) courses such as Turnberry or Royal Montrose and with very good reason. Founded by the British and designed by a Scot, Tom Dunn, Dinard is the second oldest course in France (after Pau, in Aquitaine), dating back to 1887. With pot bunkers and tight lies on sandy turf fairways edged with gorse and heather, this is a must play, especially as most of the time you're down by the shore. Not the longest, at a little over 5,800 yards, it is nevertheless an ever interesting and intricate challenge. Small, well defended greens mean you have to be on your mettle to score well, especially when the wind blows, which it usually does.

Our opinion: A must play for all golfers. Not long but can be very difficult. Favourite Hole: 6th.

Golf Barrière de Deauville Golf Barrière de Deauville

Golf Barrière de Deauville

Ref: FGN001

The original 18 hole course was built by Tom Simpson in 1929 and in the 60s Henry Cotton designed a further 9 holes. The 27 holes of Golf Barrière run through through extremely well maintained woodland on the edge of Deauville. There are magnificent views across both the town and sea, and although not long, the numerous dog-legs and tight fairways demand accuracy from the tee.

Our opinion: A 'must play' but often busy at weekends with members from Paris. Favourite Hole: 17th.

FGN005 Golf de Deauville St Gatien Golf de Deauville St Gatien

Golf de Deauville St Gatien

Ref: FGN005

Between picturesque Honfleur and elegant Deauville is Golf de Deauville St Gatien. This 27 hole parkland course is surrounded by forests with superb, open views of the Seine estuary. Half the course is in the valley, while the last nine holes are on beautifully landscaped higher ground. The magnificent timber framed clubhouse is a former 18th century cider brewery and offers a warm welcome to all visitors.

Our opinion: Definitely worth a visit. Favourite Hole: 8th.

FGN002 Golf Club de l'Amiraute Golf Club de l'Amirauté

Golf Club de l'Amirauté

Ref: FGN002

Built on a former stud farm and designed by Bill Baker, the superb course at l'Amirauté is a unique marshland course with long water hazards, wide fairways and large greens. It gives the impression of playing golf in Florida, and from the back tees this can be a real challenge. If you are struggling with the golf you can try to spot the 31 contemporary sculptures found on the course, or have a spot of lunch in the modern clubhouse, which serves excellent food, and is in a superb location with views out towards Deauville.

Our opinion: A great course, normally very quiet. Favourite Hole: 3rd.

FGN013 Golf Barriere de St Julien Golf Barrière de St Julien

Golf Barrière de St Julien

Ref: FGN013

Close to Pont l'Evêque, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge is Golf Barrière de St Julien. This traditional style course, with a sprinkling of water hazards, winds through lush Normandy pastures  A very open course in superb settings in one of France's most beautiful regions. Ponds and lakes make for good water hazards and well placed bunkers are there to catch the wayward. The 9 hole is a good test for beginners and mid-handicappers whilst the 18 hole will suit players of all levels. Following your round you can relax in the well-appointed clubhouse. Free trolley hire when playing this course.

Our opinion: Another very good course just outside Deauville. Favourite Hole: 9th.

FGB003 Golf de Pleneuf Val Andre Golf de Pléneuf Val André

Golf de Pléneuf Val André

Ref: FGB003

With exceptional views along the coast, Pléneuf-Val-André is an outstanding seaside course. A mix of clifftop links and heathland, it boasts some truly memorable holes that combine undulating fairways, thick rough, and well-protected greens. Holes 9 to 12 are particularly worthy of mention and can make or break your round, but the rest of the course is impressive - including some corking short holes. Regularly ranked among the top 10 courses in France, green fees are a fraction of the price you'd pay for an equivalent course in the UK.

Our opinion: A genuine 'must play' course and annual fixture on the European Challenge Tour. Favourite Hole: 9th.

FGB018 Golf de St Cast Golf de St Cast

Golf de St Cast

Ref: FGB018

18 holes links and top cliff golf course with impressive views of the Emerald Coast. In fact, the sea is visible from every hole as well as the clubhouse. Although a short course the fairways are narrow and you'll be surprised at the technical difficulties of some holes - the greens are often very fast. The course is lined with trees and flowers and, given its natural beauty combined with the variety of holes, this is a course to be enjoyed by all levels of golfer. There is a convivial bar with superb views.

Our opinion: The course is good for your first day to ease you in gently. Favourite hole 15th.

FGB001 Golf du Domaine des Ormes Golf du Domaine des Ormes

Golf du Domaine des Ormes

Ref: FGB001

Situated between St Malo and Comborg, Des Ormes is set in a 370 acre estate surrounding a 16th century château. The domaine also houses a family friendly resort with campsite, hotel, log cabins and even tree houses (look out for them on your way round). The course cuts through mature woodland, with beautiful flowerbeds and delightful lakes adding a sense of style in keeping with the setting. The course isn't particularly long but there's certainly no shortage of subtlety. The club house was originally a farm building and oozes character, but if the sun's out be sure to enjoy a drink or bite to eat alfresco on the terrace in front of the château.

Our opinion: A wonderful complex which has a hotel, superb facilities and a great course. Favourite Hole: 10th.

FGL005 Golf de Pornic Golf de Pornic

Golf de Pornic

Ref: FGL005

Located at the heart of a bustling seaside resort is Golf de Pornic. This 18 hole course has plenty of variety on offer, with wide undulating fairways, water hazards and some very well-defended greens. With its seaside location, this course has a holiday atmosphere throughout the year.

Our opinion: Certainly worth the effort. A real gem. Favourite Hole: 12th.

FGL004 Golf Club St Jean de Monts Golf Club St Jean de Monts

Golf Club St Jean de Monts

Ref: FGL004

The course at St Jean de Monts offers wonderful, contrasting golf. The front 9 run through thick pine forest with tight fairways, whilst the back 9 offers pure links golf with several holes running along the coast. In our opinion it is undoubtedly one of the best courses in western France.

Our opinion: A must play course. Fantastic fun! Favourite Hole: 5th.

FGL001 Golf International Barriere La Baule Golf International Barrière La Baule

Golf International Barrière La Baule

Ref: FGL001

West of Nantes, in the Brière national park is Golf International Barrière La Baule, boasting two 18 hole championship courses and a nine hole layout, making 45 in total. Since being revamped and expanded, this fantastic course has played host to the French Open so some holes offer the chance to follow in the footsteps of Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros. The thatched roofed clubhouse overlooks an outdoor swimming pool.

Our opinion: Many world stars have played here. A great course - follow in their footsteps! Favourite Hole: 18th.

FGL003 Golf de la Bretesche Golf de la Bretesche

Golf de la Bretesche

Ref: FGL003

Golf de la Bretesche is a must visit when in Western Loire or South Brittany, offering a spectacular setting and a course in immaculate condition. The focal point is the fairytale château and lake, with holes skirting around the estate and fairways lined with colourful hydrangeas and rhododendrons. After your round relax in the stone clubhouse or maybe the hotel, all in tastefully converted outbuildings of the old estate.

Our opinion: Everything about La Bretesche is top class. Favourite Hole: 9th.

FGL009 Golf Nantes Vigneux Golf Nantes Vigneux

Golf Nantes Vigneux

Ref: FGL009

Designed by English architect Frank Pennick, this is a testing course, criss-crossed by the river Cens. It sits in 130 acres of spectacular parkland around the Château de Buron and the only sound you will hear is the birds and the wind in the 100 year old trees. This is a tactical course and keeping the ball in play is vital; the long hitters will be keeping the drivers in the bag. You will have a warm welcome in the friendly clubhouse which boasts a good restaurant overlooking the terrace.

Our opinion: An excellent course worth a visit. Favourite Hole: 11th.

FGL002 Golf de Savenay Golf de Savenay

Golf de Savenay

Ref: FGL002

Between Nantes and St Nazaire is Golf de Savenay, a pleasant course on the edge of the Brière marshes and close to the beaches of La Baule. With varied terrain, chestnut woods, open valleys and water hazards this picturesque golf course is well worth playing.

Our opinion: A real gem worth a visit. Favourite Hole: 10th.

FGN011 Golf du Vaudreuil Golf du Vaudreuil

Golf du Vaudreuil

Ref: FGN011

Conveniently located between Evreux and Paris, Golf du Vaudreuil is a flat, mature course. Designed by Hawtree, the fairways wind through magnificently preserved parkland planted with a variety of trees where accuracy off the tee is essential. Try not to be distracted by the fabulous houses that line the course! The clubhouse is one of the very best in France, a former thatched barn that offers comfortable furnishings and a well-appointed restaurant.

Our opinion: Outstanding course in outstanding surroundings. Favourite Hole: 9th.

FGN003 Golf Club du Champ de Bataille Golf Club du Champ de Bataille

Golf Club du Champ de Bataille

Ref: FGN003

This course has one of the most visually stunning golf holes you're ever likely to see, the 17th, a short but fiendishly tight par three across a valley simply brimming with 100 year old rhododendrons. You could almost be at Augusta, although this wonderful championship standard course, Golf Club de Champ de Bataille, is amongst the most beautiful in France and has also been compared with Wentworth and Woburn. In the grounds of a magnificent Louis XIV château, Champ de Bataille, the holes meander through valleys and skirt lakes, all whilst bordering ancient trees and flowering bushes.

Our opinion: A 'must play' when in Normandy. Favourite Hole: 17th.

FGN004 Omaha Beach Golf Club Mer Omaha Beach Golf Club Mer

Omaha Beach Golf Club Mer

Ref: FGN004

With a combination of four very different nine hole loops, there's a rich variety of golf at Omaha Beach and a wealth of history and culture. La Mer has holes named after Second World War figures (including Churchill, Eisenhower and De Gaulle). With spectacular views of the D-Day landing beaches and a poignant memorial near the gun emplacements at the back of the sixth green, this course offers Le Bocage (Hedgerow), L'Etang (Pond) and the most recent section, Le Manoir (Manor), to make up a terrific sporting test with different challenges either along the coast or in rich rolling countryside. Be sure to sample calvados, the famously delicious and powerful brandy made from the apples growing in the orchards you'll see on some of the inland holes. Free trolley hire when playing this course.

Our opinion: Take a minute when you've played the 6th hole. Favourite Hole: 6th.

FGN023 Omaha Beach Golf Club Manoir Omaha Beach Golf Club Manoir

Omaha Beach Golf Club Manoir

Ref: FGN023

Situated in Port en Bessin is a new American style course, Omaha Beach Golf Club Manoir, which has incorporated the 9 hole L'Etang with 9 new exciting holes which play towards the Manoir Gerard. The course offers some spectacular water hazards and the rolling terrain helps complete a superb layout with fantastic views. Your game will be tested as you require accuracy and power to play this course well. Free buggy hire when playing this course.

Our opinion: Now one of the best 36 holes complexes in France. Favourite Hole: 9th.

FGN014 Golf de Granville Golf de Granville

Golf de Granville

Ref: FGN014

Located at Bréville, Golf de Granville is a true links and offers sensational views across to the Channel Islands. Re-seeded over recent years, with refurbished bunkers and celebrating its centenary in 2012, Granville is brimming with heritage and bears many tell-tale signs of the great designer Harry Colt, such as several plateau greens which, combined with the wind, present a real challenge in stopping the ball on the putting surface. If you're looking to put together an itinerary featuring different types of course then this really has to be on your list. Or, if you're simply seeking a top quality track then Granville ticks that box too. As an added bonus, it's also on the Bay of Mont St Michel so one of the most popular and romantic tourist destinations is nearby, smack bang on the border of Normandy and Brittany. Free trolley hire when playing this course.

Our opinion: A 'must play' if you enjoy links golf. Favourite Hole: 5th.

FGB002 Golf Club de St Malo Golf Club de St Malo

Golf Club de St Malo

Ref: FGB002

Designed by Hubert Chesneau, the mastermind behind French Open venue Golf National, and set in the ancient hunting grounds of Mesnil Forest, St Malo has matured very nicely indeed over the past quarter of a century. From first (a relatively gentle par five) to last (a great closing hole with a well guarded green in full view of the clubhouse terrace), this is amongst the very finest of the new generation of French golf courses and it's only half an hour from the ferry terminal at St Malo. There's water on 13 holes and some fiendishly positioned bunkers but don't be put off because the fairways are mostly generous and the greens true. With an on-site hotel, restaurant and bar it's also an excellent place to stay. Free trolley hire when playing this course.

Our opinion: One of Brittany's best - every hotel room is different and the course is top class. Favourite Hole: 6th.

FGB010 Golf de Saint Laurent Golf de Saint-Laurent

Golf de Saint-Laurent

Ref: FGB010

This Michel Fenn design hosted the French Professional Championships in '88 and '89 along with the National Open in '95. The tree-lined fairways are fairly generous and not too long, making this a very enjoyable rather than daunting challenge. You can warm up with 9 holes before tackling the championship course. After your round a modern clubhouse awaits you.

Our opinion: A championship venue not to be missed. Favourite Hole: 6th.
