Situated on the sunny Mediterranean coast Languedoc Roussillon has a wealth of history and heritage, as well as beautiful beaches.
This region boasts an enormous stretch of sun-soaked Mediterranean coastline with some of the finest beaches in France and modern seaside resorts offering a good choice of sporting activity as well as a lively night scene. Venture inland to wide open spaces, heathland, lakes, mountain top castles, sweeping vineyards and spectacular gorges. And the famous Camargue, where you will fi nd wonderful wildlife, including pink flamingos, white horses and black bulls in the nature parks and reserves.
There is much historic interest here too - the Pont du Gard aqueduct is a masterpiece of Roman engineering and the impressive medieval fortress of Carcassonne is the largest citadel in Europe.
Places to visit in Languedoc Roussillon
Montpellier
A bustling city, with open air cafés and street entertainment all along the Promenade du Peyrou. There are also beautiful botanic gardens to stroll around.
Perpignan
Shop for Catalan ceramics and textiles or just enjoy the old quarter with its narrow streets, colourful markets and palm-lined squares.
Sète
This charming port is reminiscent of Venice with its network of canals and bridges, pretty pink and blue painted buildings and wrought iron balconies.

Aqualand
Located in Cap d'Agde this huge, popular water park will provide fun for the whole family. Luna Park is here too - an island full of amusements and funfair attractions.
Hiking
The large Catalan Pyrenees Natural Park has a wealth of hiking trails through peaceful villages such as Vernet les Bains.
Yellow train ride
The 64k journey from Villefranche de Conflent to the ski resort of Font Romeu takes you through tunnels and over gorges with spectacular views - a great photo opportunity.
Food and drink
Local specialities
Pélardon des Cévennes - a rich goats' cheese. Anchovies. Wild mushrooms, chestnuts and walnuts from the mountains. Camargue red rice.
What's on the menu?
Cassoulet, a hearty casserole of white haricot beans, goose, duck or sausages. Rouille à la Sétoise, cuttlefish cooked in tomatoes and saffron.
