Burgundy guide

Legendary wines and cuisine specialities, together with scenic countryside, medieval villages and fine cities, all help to make Burgundy a delight.

Although rich in history and heritage with Romanesque churches, châteaux and abbeys it is the world famous wines that are Burgundy's greatest ambassadors.

Sample some at the numerous cellars or follow one of the great wine routes of France passing through villages with well known names such as Mâcon, Fuissé and Chablis.

Take your bicycles with you and explore the beautiful countryside along marked trails, on country roads and through the Morvan Regional Park where you can also try rock climbing, watersports or just relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Places to visit in Burgundy

Auxerre

A picturesque city with half-timbered houses and a fine cathedral. It is best viewed by cruising along the Nivernais Canal or by cycling along the towpath.

Dijon

Burgundy's historic capital has splendid architecture, top class restaurants, botanical gardens and a mustard museum.

Nevers

A town renowned for its high quality hand painted porcelain which also has a charming old quarter where you can explore narrow winding streets lined with quaint medieval
houses.

Things to do in Burgundy

Hot air ballooning

This is a popular activity in Burgundy and a great way to see the region. Various agencies including 'Air Escargot' in Remigny arrange flights over canals and vineyards.

Les Chemins de Puisaye

An area of many marked footpaths ideal for hiking and horse riding and the terrain is also great for mountain biking.

Magny Cours

Famous for the French Formula One race, there is also a go karting circuit open to the public - an exhilarating day out for the whole family.

Local specialities

Burgundy snails (supposed to be the biggest in France). Charolais beef. Dijon mustard.

What's on the menu?

Pochouse, a delicious fish stew made with freshwater fish in white wine. Dishes served 'à la bourguignonne' which means in a sauce of red wine, shallots, mushrooms and butter.

What to drink

Kir, white wine with blackcurrant liqueur. Burgundy red and white wines.
