Popular produce from Western Loire
You'll find that many markets in Western Loire will feature an exceptionally fine selection of free-range chickens. Those from Challans and Loué in the Sarthe department are considered by a lot of people to be the very best of all, which probably has something to do with the fact that they are all exclusively grain fed for extra tenderness and taste. Duck from Challans is also very highly rated.
When it comes to vegetables, the valley areas around Nantes are noted for the quality of their produce, and their variety. Carrots, lettuce, cabbages, green peas, leeks and tomatoes are just some of the crops that grow here in abundance alongside the famous vineyards of Muscadet and Gros Plan. Also, do try some Vendée ham if you get the opportunity, and a few of the many varieties of goat cheeses produced locally.
Fruits of the sea
With a huge stretch of the Atlantic Ocean conveniently on hand, it goes almost without saying that seafood also features prominently in Western Loire's markets, particularly those held in towns and villages close to the coast. Lobsters, mussels, shrimps, crayfish, scallops and oysters are just some of the shellfish that are usually on sale at knock down prices. You should also find a good variety of mackerel, sardines, tuna, sole and bass. All will be totally fresh. In fact many fishing village markets will have the daily catch on sale within just an hour of it being landed. If you're not sure how to best cook your purchases, just ask the fishermen themselves. They are real experts at the art, and most are more than happy to pass on a few tips.
